What is a fluid painting? It has also referenced as fluid art, liquid art, or acrylic pouring. It is a form of art creating an abstract painting. The paint blends as it leaves the container creating interesting and sometimes unexpected results.
What is all the fuss? The project today was a first attempt to fluid painting. The results of the abstract art was mind blowing to discover how colors blended in a cup and poured out on to the canvas became a creation of art.
There are endless creative possibilities, by selecting several paint colors and blending the colors in the same container before pouring on to the canvas.
It is a few simple steps and you have art on a canvas. A quick and easy process and a fabulous piece of art to be proud of.
Getting started with fluid painting is an adrenaline rush for experimenting with vivid colors and techniques. It is fun for all ages!
It is intriguing to learn fluid painting and wanted to share the experience with two finished art paintings with totally different results.
Supplies Needed:
- Acrylic Paints
- Floetrol (type of medium)
- Lubricant spray
- Red cups (2 oz size)
- Large Plastic cup or container
- Wooden stir sticks
- Canvas
- Plastic sheets for work area
- Clear top coat
What is a pre-mix color?
Next, decide how many colors you will use, the color choices are unlimited and never two painting will turn out the same. Experiment with the colors and techniques of fluid pouring.
In the pour experiment today, we used six colors, blue, red, yellow, and silver, black and white.
Set out six red cups and add the acrylic paint to each cup and fill it half full. Then blend each color cup with floetrol (medium) and mix well for semi-liquid paint consistency.
Ready to Pour?
Let’s get started by adding the pre-mixed colors into a large cup or container, by alternating each color and slowly pouring the paint into the container. Once the container is full of paint add a few squirts of lubricant oil into the cup. The lubricant oil transforms the paint and “create cells” to form in your artwork.
The next step, pour the cup onto your canvas in a single pour, in a circle motion, or just randomly across the canvas.
Tilt the canvas back and forth to move the paint and cover the canvas. Gently move the canvas in a tilting motion and move the paint slowly to cover the entire canvas to create array color of art.
This is a simple and EASY art lesson to follow! It is a unique process, so let’s get “down and dirty” with mixing paints and create a unique canvas of art to show off.
