How to Grade your Lot for Proper Water Flow

The grading is an important step before foundation work begins.  Many homeowners are unaware of how much slope of your grade is required around the house foundation.  The important issue if the grading is not done properly, the improper drainage could be directed towards your foundation.

The analysis of water flow on your lot is to create the correct grading of your lot.  To achieve to proper balance for water flow and grading for your lot; this is an important step to complete before building your custom home.

Avoid Standing Water on your Lot

If the slope grade falls towards the foundation, you could easily develop a drainage problem at some point.  The improper standing water around the foundation will eventually comprise the integrity of the foundation.

How to you determine the proper Slope for your Grading?

To determine the proper slope, the land grade to extend from a house foundation is about six inches for every ten feet.  The goal is to slope at approximately five percent.  There are some professional grading companies will decide to grade of a lesser slope because they think it will good enough slope.

Achieve Water Flow and the Proper Grade?

The reason for grading your yard is to move the water/runoff from its current location and to move it into different locations within your land.  In most cases, home owner re-grade the land to slope AWAY from the house to avoid any pooling of water near the foundation.
