Does your back yard embrace a fireplace pit? Have you thought of adding a fire element to your outdoor space? It will add a dramatic ambiance setting! Make it a retreat, a desirable destination!
There are chilly nights to sit around a fire with your dearest friends and family members. Snuggled up by a warm fire with your favorite beverage adds ambiance and in a comfortable desirable setting.
Portable fire pits are popular and easy answers for an instant look for your backyard. We will share with you a simple budget friendly fire pit that provides an oasis appeal. Turn your backyard into a retreat!!
LET’S FOCUS ON STONE CHOICES
It is important to find a stone feature to withstand a high intensity heat. An average landscape paver is not rated to handle intense heat from fires. If used in the fire pit it will end up breaking apart.
We used cement (CMU) block, as seen for regular use of retaining walls. CMU is the best option for intense heat.
We agreed on the natural face (decorative) CMU block actual size is 6-inch x 8-inch x 16-inch. For our project, we used approximately (24) CMU blocks and stacked with two stones height.
SELECTING A LOCATION
We selected a location at the base of our wooded lot, to provide the “real” ambience setting, like a feel of a camping type of experience, a s’mores treat!
LAYOUT DESIGN!
We leveled out the dirt of the area we decided to build the pit. Placed each stone side by side in a curvature layout for a complete circle. Continued to add a second stone layer to provide the height we were looking for approximately 16- inches in height. Perfect!
At the interior base of the fire pit we added a couple inches of pea gravel. Next step is to chop dry seasoned wood and stack in your new fire pit!
NOTE: We made the bench from leftover construction materials from the CMU stone, and created a sitting bench! The bench was made from natural stone material to complete the seat.
It was a budget friendly project and we love the natural setting of the fire pit in a wooded lot.
SAFETY
Use caution for fire safety;
- Burn dry wood, which burns hot and clean.
- Never burn green wood, plastic, garbage or yard waste. This could create smoke and can be toxic.
- Take extra precautions if surrounded with brush and dry leaves if fire sparks.
- Fire extinguisher at site is a safety measure.
