TIP#1 – PREPARE A BUDGET
A budget is a MUST before you start a remodeling project. What is a budget for a renovation? If you spend money on a project, know HOW much is allotted for the project.
It will take some time to focus on your project and plan a detailed scope of work. After the scope of work is completed; have a reasonable budget in mind. Plan accordingly to get bids on materials and labor.
It is as simple as generating a spreadsheet and incorporating all the budgeted items required for the project. If you identify the expense of the project is over budget, go back to material list and make some friendly adjustments by shopping for similar products to bring down some material expense.
If you benefit from DIY labor work, this will eliminate some of the labor expense.
Set aside a reserve of funds; a contingency for unexpected expenses that may be required during the remodeling process.
TIP #2 – DIY SKILLS
Obviously, this is one of the most efficient ways to save money during a home renovation. If you’re speculating, “I’m not handy, so this tip’s not for me,” well, think again! You may not want to install drywall or tile a bathroom, but there are some things you can do.
If you can demo the space, clean up, remove old flooring or popcorn ceiling, texture the walls, painting, and moderate landscaping your several steps ahead.
If you have moderate DIY skills, take it up a notch—now’s the time! Learning a new DIY task will be fun and provide you a sense of an accomplishment.
As long as your driven and focused to learn a new skill, and able to execute the task correctly. Go For It!
TIPS #3 – FIND THE BALANCE
Get the most out of your project by spending more on important items, such as granite or quartz countertops or energy-efficient appliances.
If you find a balance in your remodel vs budget, since it varies so much depending on your project and style preferences. Find the balance; don’t make the mistake of spending too much on designer products but look for less expensive items that are just as design trendy.
Do not overspend on name brand; stay focused on budget and quality. It is essential to find the balance, do not go to extremes.
It’s easy to get emotional on material selections, but remember stay on task, BUDGET is essential. Overspending will cause unknown stress or a remodel project may become uncompleted.
TIP #4 – RE-CYCLE MATERIALS
What do you mean when it is suggested to re-cycle materials? If you have decent cabinets in the kitchen, paint is an excellent option. This will update your kitchen without replacing cabinets, JUST by using a little paint! Install new hardware on your cabinets to give it a completed NEW look.
Another option is to replace the cabinet door only and leave the shell of the cabinets in place. If you need to replace appliances, shop around. I have found scratch and dent sales with economical pricing on high-end appliances. It takes little effort to shop around to find savings to make sure you stay within your budget.
The search for re-cycle materials can be fun and adds so much character to your project. Be creative and have fun with your remodel!
